Clinical Internships & Shadowing at Wofford (Student-Friendly Guide)

If you’re interested in shadowing healthcare professionals and earning academic credit, Wofford has two approved Interim options. Because of legal and contractual requirements with healthcare systems, these are the only ways Wofford can award credit for clinical shadowing.

Your Two Credit-Bearing Options

Option 1: Clinical Internships Interim (Highly Structured)

This is a competitive, structured Interim course that takes place only at Wofford’s contracted hospitals:

  • Spartanburg Regional
  • Bon Secours (Greenville)
  • St. Francis (Greenville)

What to know:

  • Requires extensive pre-requisites and onboarding
  • Limited number of spots
  • Minimum 3.3 GPA required
  • Priority given to students with 3.4+ GPA planning to apply to medical or PA school
  • Includes 110+ hours of physician/PA shadowing
  • Applications open early fall semester

Option 2: Learning Work Interim (More Flexible)

This option allows students to shadow healthcare professionals outside the contracted hospitals or with non-physician professionals.

What to know:

  • Arranged by the student and approved through the Interim Coordinator
  • Can take place outside Spartanburg/Greenville (ex: Charleston, Charlotte, hometown clinics)
  • Must NOT require a contract or liability waiver between Wofford and the healthcare provider
  • If a hospital or clinic requires Wofford to sign paperwork → the proposal will not be approved

Important Policy Basics (Read This First)

  • Only Clinical Internships Interim and Learning Work Interim can earn Wofford credit for clinical shadowing
  • Wofford cannot award credit for:
    • External programs
    • Hospital programs at other universities
    • Experiences that require Wofford to sign contracts or liability waivers
  • Wofford will not create new contracts with hospitals or healthcare systems
  • These rules exist due to legal and liability requirements, not student qualifications

Common Student Questions

Where can I shadow outside Spartanburg/Greenville?

Through Learning Work Interim, as long as the healthcare site does not require a legal contract with Wofford.

Example:

  • ✔️ Shadowing a physician at a private clinic in Charleston with no contract required
  • ❌ Shadowing at a hospital that requires Wofford to sign paperwork

What GPA do I need for Clinical Internships Interim?

  • Minimum GPA: 3.3
  • Priority consideration: 3.4+, especially for pre-med or pre-PA students

When do I apply for Clinical Internships Interim?

  • Applications open early fall semester
