International graduates are valuable applicants for positions in the U.S. as they often have unique skills in language, multicultural perspectives, real-world problem-solving skills, and/or knowledge of overseas markets. However, the U.S. job market can be competitive and employers sometimes find that hiring international students long-term can be costly and time-consuming. Thus, the more knowledgeable you are about F-1 work authorization options and the more experience you bring to an employer, the more attractive you are as a potential employee. The Career Center and the Office of International Programs partner to advise international students on finding internships and job opportunities alongside understanding their work authorization parameters. Post-Graduate Employment Options
Due to visa restrictions, international students interested in working in the U.S. after graduation must find positions directly related to their major and an employer willing to invest extra time and money to sponsor a work visa. F-1 students are eligible for up to one year (12 months) of work authorization after graduation (or three years for STEM majors) through Optional Practical Training (OPT) with little to no effort by their employer. However, after that, employers must sponsor students through an H1-B or another work visa category which involves government applications, fees, limited deadlines, and often legal advice for a limited number of visa spots. Thus, it is not something employers take lightly, and smaller companies may have very little experience with this process. Thus, the best employment prospects are often with international companies and organizations that have historically sponsored H1-B visas. The timelines and expertise required to be successful in such applications also call for long-term planning and we have found that students who started building their U.S. networks early through mentoring, internships, research, and Career Center advising have been the most successful.
